Bottom Fishing
Bottom fishing takes place anywhere from 1 mile out up to 100 miles out. The shorter trips (4-5 hrs) usually fish within 10 miles of Destin, 6 hrs can range up to 15 – 17 miles offshore and the full day trips start at 20 + miles and go beyond out into the Big Blue in on the fishin mission for a great catch! Bottom fishing is done over wrecks (tug boats, barges, airplanes, ships) and over natural coral reefs. Of course all charter boat captains have their favorite (secret) fishing spots that have good luck on.
The captain will position the boat over the reef or wreck and the fishermen and women will lower their lines to the bottom or just off of it using live baits and select fresh cut baits. Getting the bite is the easy part, it is dealing with a fish that is trying its best to take your pole away from you that’s the challenge. The great thing about bottom fishing is that you just never know what’s going to bite next. Groupers, Red Snappers, Amberjacks and triggerfish are just a few of the many species you will encounter. Bottom fishing can be done from a charter boat or a party boat on ½ day or full day trips. The charter boats can even combine trolling and bottom fishing in one day on the longer trips.
